While summer is a few months away, you should be thinking about checking your air conditioning system to make sure that when the heat comes, you won’t be regretting not checking it sooner. When you go in for your next scheduled maintenance, ask your mechanic about checking your air conditioning system. This will allow for you to take care of any maintenance or service issues before the stifling heat is upon us.
Maintaining Your Vehicles AC System
How Does AC Work?- An air conditioners in your car works a lot like your refrigerator in your home. It takes the heat out of your car rather than putting cool air into your car. The first step is when the refrigerant free-on gets pressurized by a compressor that heats up the free-on gas into a liquid. It then travels through a receiver drier to remove any water particles to make sure the water doesn’t freeze and form ice crystals destroying your AC. Then the liquid refrigerant flows through a thermal expansion valve that allows the liquid to transform into a gas, thereby cooling the liquid. A fan draws out the hot air in your car and replaces that with cold air to cool you off. And that gas goes right back through the compressor to start the cycle all over again.
DIY?-While the basic recharge can be done by yourself at home, more complex repairs requires basic tools and strong knowledge of the car’s electrical and mechanical systems. So while it can be done on your own it’s not a job for those not mechanically inclined. In some cases the Ac system just needs to be re-charged. However if recharging the AC doesn’t fix the problem it could be a clog or part failure and repair cost can vary wildly depending on what is wrong with your AC. In general with any car vehicle issue it is best to identify the problem sooner rather than later. This can help to save you a lot of money on unneeded repairs that have could have been prevented early on.
While you may not be thinking about your AC system now, Spring and Summer are only a couple months away from making your car ride unbearable. Make sure to be a couple steps ahead of the heat and schedule your AC check and maintenance today! You won’t regret it!
